If the car battery isn’t the reason for your flickering car lights, you might be dealing with a bad light bulb or a bad fuse. Failing light bulbs are an easy and quick fix and present an opportunity to upgrade to new energy-efficient LED bulbs.
If your vehicle has a bad fuse, you could be looking at a bigger problem than you had originally anticipated. A fuse dies when there is excess electrical current flowing through it. As an example, if your anti-lock brakes are installed with a 10amp fuse, and the fuse receives more than 10amps of electrical current, the fuse will fail. In this example, this would also cause your anti-lock brakes to fail. If there is a fuse that regularly fails, bring it in and we’ll accurately diagnose the larger, potentially more dangerous problem.
Flickering dashboard lights can also be one of the signs the alternator is failing. Think of it this way, you start your car with power from the battery, but the alternator supplies the power that keeps your car running. If you have an old vehicle with halogen lights, you may notice them gradually get dimmer with a dying alternator. On newer cars equipped with LED or HID lights, they may flicker or just stop functioning altogether.
A bad light switch, either the interior dimmer or the headlight switch, should also be checked out when you have flickering lights on the car. In some situations, replacing a worn switch could solve the issue, especially in vehicles with excessive mileage or older vehicles. If your vehicle is newer, it could be symptoms of a more significant issue with the electrical system.
